From the farm to the operating theatre, our team have traditional backgrounds and a passion for providing excellent care

When it comes to your pet’s welfare, choosing the right vet is crucial. Your pet’s health comes first and this is something the team here at Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital completely understand. In addition to this, owners of Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital – William Hayden and Tom Mullany – feel it’s equally important to consider your financial situation when prescribing a course of treatment. This principle is mirrored at the Hospital and can be traced back to their childhood passions.

“Exceptional veterinary care doesn’t have to be associated with an expensive price tag.”

William Hayden and Tom Mullany

WilliamHaydenWilliam grew up on his family farm in Tinahely, County Wicklow and was surrounded by an array of animals including working dogs, working cats, cattle, sheep and pigs. From a very early age he became interested in their care and management.

After experiencing his grandfather’s and father’s knowledge of animal care, William regularly referred back to his grandfather’s ‘black book’ of local cures for animals that he made in the early part of the 20th century. After taking a huge interest in caring for animals on the farm, becoming a veterinary surgeon was an obvious career choice for William.

After qualifying, William worked with both large and small animals in England and Australia before returning to work in Wicklow. In the early 90s William decided to establish Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital as an opportunity to provide a high quality service, utilising many of the good ideas he had encountered abroad. Pooling ideas with friend and colleague Tom Mullany, they found a suitable site (in view of the Wicklow Hills) and worked with architect Michael Rice to design a state-of-the-art and purpose built hospital at Nutgrove.

TomMullanyTom’s childhood was incredibly similar. He spent most of his childhood holidays on relatives’ farms in Roscommon and Sligo. There he met local vets who cared for the farms’ inhabitants. Even as a youngster, he was so impressed by their dedication that he asked to travel with them while they carried out their farm visits.

These experiences made him want to follow in their footsteps. After qualifying as a veterinary surgeon, he spent some time working in a large and small animal practice in Ireland, before moving to England to specialise in caring for animals such as dogs and cats. Together, Tom and William have created the ethos that Nutgrove Veterinary Hospital embodies, and one of which they are incredibly proud.

Over the years the hospital has consistently achieved the highest standard of accreditation the Veterinary Council of Ireland can provide, guaranteeing your pet exceptional veterinary care at all times. The hospital itself also boasts a number of firsts in the industry, one of which includes Tom being the first practising vet in Ireland to be awarded the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons certificate in Veterinary Cardiology. Along with William’s qualification in Veterinary Radiology, the veterinary hospital has also been able to offer services such as human grade dental treatments.

It was also one of the first practices in the country to offer small animal diagnostic ultrasound, allowing accurate diagnosis of conditions that could otherwise have been overlooked.
